Tracktion is a fairly decent program that also allows plug in. If you are choosing between Cakewalk and Garage Band go Cakewalk Sonar it is far more flexible but it is definitely more complicated to use. For post porduction I recommend Adobe Soundbooth and Tracktion with some good VST plug ins to help remove unwanted sound. Garage band isn't a bad program to say but it is fairly limited but if you are competent enough wiht sound you may be able to get something out of it(hell someone painted the Mona Lisa in MS Paint and someone else made a feature Movie out of Imovie so anything is possible). Also get Pro-Tools it is available for both Mac OS X and Win XP. It does want an M-audio sound card but iti is a great program. On top of that if you are using a Mac go for Logic 7. It is technically made by Apple but only because they bought E-magic after 6.2.
