Final Fantasy XI (PS2/PC/360) worked pretty well and was even giving WoW a pretty good run for their money for a while.

Sadly FFXI was a little too hardcore and WoW was super casual so WoW won out in the end.

 FFXI never gave WoW any competition. Their peak subscribers was somewhere around 600k world wide, and at that time they were the largest western MMO. WoW had that before the end of their first holiday season as I recall. They even stopped selling the game for a time because the servers were overloaded and simply did not have the hardware on hand to put up new ones. FFXI was great in its era, and dethroned Everquest as largest western MMO. World of Warcraft is simply a beast that changed the industry completely though. There was nothing that came before it that had even half the popularity and pull in any market.
