If any game (no matter how good it is) got the same amount of fanboyism/spin-offs FFVII gets, it would be a bad game. Why do you think it's so cool to bash VII now? Because it's fun to piss people off. Hell, I do it sometimes.
No game can survive that kind of fan-base. It used to be one of my favorite games, till it got so fun to piss people off by simply uttering the word "overrated".
FFVIII would be no different.
