Apples to apples these days. Each one has an edge for a few months before the competitor strikes with a product that improves in some areas.

I used AMD for several years with the first few gens of Athlons. Never had any complaints. The big deal is to get a quality motherboard, regardless of which brand you buy. That will save you from any serious headaches. Don't skimp on the power supply either. Buy Seasonic or Antec or something equivalent.

Now I have an Intel Core 2 Quad, which I built a little over a year ago. It's a great system, even to this day. Intel motherboard was a bit pricey, but has been ultra-reliable.

Bottom-line, both brands are great products. Get what seems to fit your budget, and buy a quality motherboard, PSU, and good RAM. Think of those things first, because many people have a tendency to put those parts on the backburner where they really should receive the most scrutiny.
