I used to be a big AMD fan but I've stuck with Intel for the past eight years or so because Intel actually designs chipsets for their motherboards. I've never had a stability issue with an Intel system. Ever.
My AMD experiences on the other hand... relying on VIA and nVidia for motherboard chipsets was not in any way fun.
The best price/performance deal to be had for CPUs these days probably goes to the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. It's a 3ghz dual core chip and you can find it for under $160 if you look around.
Intel has really leaped way ahead of AMD when it comes to performance ever since the introduction of the Core2 CPUs.
