Japan. It was the most important country for video games and I think it still is.
Today's US developers are way too FPS and action oriented for my taste, but I will always remember those great US game companies who ceased to exist as developer or publisher:
MicroProse, Origin, SSI, Sir-Tech, Interplay, Spectrum HoloByte, Westwood Studios, Black Isle Studios, Acclaim, Accolade, Sierra On-Line, Dynamix...and then there's LucasArts (sometimes I wonder if George even knows he owns a company which used to create brilliant games in the 80s and 90s).
Honorable mentions go to Atari, Infocom and Epyx (but I've never played a game from these legendary companies).
