They really shouldn't need to be held up to a different set of standards, although in there position I would prefer they error on the side of to harsh. I actually think I feel this way because there are too many celebrities that get away with more than what normal people do, so in my mind I think I convinced myself that to balance this out there needs to be a wave of overly harsh punishments handed out to celebrities.
