Finding the right person for the part was no easy task. After a series of screen tests and several weeks of weapons and stunts training, Capcom made their choice and finally offered Karen the role of a lifetime. Her background as a dancer and cirque performer served her well for the many action scenes she was asked to perform. “I like to be physical and I always like a dare, so this was right up my alley”, says Karen.
One of her challenges was learning everything left-handed for the Sheva role. As Chris Redfield’s military partner in Africa, Sheva’s skills as a markswoman and an agile fighter had to be top-notch. The right-handed Dyer actually got certified with pistols and rifles, becoming proficient with both left and right-handed positions.
When it came to the voice, Karen tested with different accents until Capcom made a final decision on Sheva’s sound. Says Karen, “Sheva’s sound is from a little bit of everywhere, born in Africa, raised in England, traveled and trained in Europe.” Karen’s own background, Jamaican with Irish and East Indian roots, helped her as well.
Introducing a new partnership to millions of Resident Evil fans came with a huge responsibility. “The director, Jim Sonzero, wanted to show how Chris and Sheva, two characters with such different backgrounds and skills, could work together as equals and have a real sense of teamwork. And I think we accomplished that”, said Karen.
What was it like working with Reuben Langdon? “We got along fantastic!”, said Dyer of her motion caption co-star/producer of RE5 as well as Dante from the Devil May Cry series. “It’s great when someone challenges you and supports you at the same time. I’ve learned so much from him.” The pairing work together so well, Capcom is now looking into producing a trilogy of action films starring them both.
Karen’s credits include featured roles in Idlewild, Thank You For Smoking, Tortilla Soup and According To Jim. She can be currently seen as The Forrest Nymph in both this year’s Prada fashion campaign videos and Madonna’s current Hard Candy Tour. Upcoming films include “A Christmas Carol” with Jim Carrey directed by Robert Zemeckis.
After working on the role for eight months, it’s no surprise Karen feels close to her character. “It’s been an amazing journey playing Sheva” says Dyer “It’s challenged me as an artist and has taught me a lot about inner strength, teamwork, and social consciousness. Sheva’s dedicated to helping her fellow man and her country. We could all learn a thing or two from her.”

I think the skin tone was EXACTLY what they were going for. Yes mixed people do exist, like my child. NO it isn't racist.
