If you are a subscriber to the ign podcast, you probably heard about the factor 5 petition thing and the halo3 vs. brawl discussion. Its pretty interesting to see how this is going to turn out.

Both games push console sales. Its known for a fact that people on the fence, waiting to buy a Wii or a 360 are also waiting for Brawl and Halo 3. The moment either comes out, regardless if which fanboy you are, the chances are that your gonna get a 360 when Halo 3 comes out, or your gonna get a Wii i when Brawl hits the shelves. (makes no difference which consoles you currently own.)

The games are just that good. They tap into the hardcore of each platform to the point that it draws in everyone in the vincinity. Core and Casual gamers alike. (more so for brawl than Halo)

THE QUESTION IS: Which will sell more initially and in the long run?

Both consoles are selling roughly the same amount, the lead the Wii has on the 360 isn't sufficient enough to make that much of a difference right now. Who knows how much the lead Wii has on the xbox360 will matter later this year?

FACT: Smash Bros Meelee sold almost as much as Halo

PREDICTIONS:

IN AMERICA

Halo 3 will greatly outsell Brawl on day one and the weeks to come. Low chance Brawl could ever catch up.

IN JAPAN

Brawl takes the cake for itself. Halo 3 has no chance in Japan. Not while that adorable little bastard pikachu is still playable in Brawl.

OVERALL

Brawl falls behind just barely. By May of next year, Brawl will catch up because the amount of Wii's sold will be significant enough to make a impact. But who knows for sure? Halo 3 is being marketed like a $HIT load, while Brawl is only being marketed towards its already established fan base (via the smash bros dojo that most casual gamers dont even know about). Then again, there are alot of good games coming out for the xbox360 around the same this year, (Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed etc.) and it could cause competition for Halo 3. This prediction will only hold true if Nintendo bucks up and starts pouring money into getting the word out on Brawl, as MS did with Halo 3, which i doubt they'll do. More likely, there will release a few "Wii would like to play" commercials or reveal something amazing that jump starts the Brawl hype right before launch. But thats just wishful thinking I suppose.

QUESTION: What are your predictions, and who will sell more? America? Japan? Worldwide?

EDIT:

I've added a chart for the sales of both games. All credit for this chart goes to naznatips, I did not get this myself.
