True, hot air rises. But your conclusion is wrong, hot air rising is precisely why it should be on top. If you put the 360 on top, it will have some breathing space around it (let's not forget it has ventilation holes on top of it). Meaning hot air will be able to leave the area better, and the wood above is not in contact with the 360, so it's not as bad as having another device in full/closer contact. If it's sandwiched, heat will be concentrated around it (not in the air, in the other devices). Air is a better heat conductor than plastic AFAIK.

Its not the conduction that makes air useful, its the convection. Because air is a fluid it can take the heat away from the console.
