The memory amount has very little impact on performance. Having a big number is a marketing trick to make the uninformed buy it. 512MB should be fine.

The 4870 should run all games at smooth framerates on the high settings at resolutions of 1920x1200 or less. Anything better than that is for people with insanely large monitors only.

Yeah, the only real difference you'll find with higher RAM is the amount of Anti-Aliasing you can do, and even then it only really makes a big difference on the really high-end parts like the 4870X2, and the GTX Geforces
