Heh, lucky spoiled Yankees (well you for a loger time) and Italian youngsters 
: when I did the national service (now abrogated, Italy switched to professional army a few years ago after more than 140 years) I used a quite heavy 7.62 BM59 Para (a FN FAL derivative, the foldable stock version) just a few grams lighter than an AK47, the army was just starting the switch to 5.56 AR70, but I had no opportunity to try one 
Obviously professional soldiers of the Intruder Parachootists and other special forces Regiments already used newer and more sophisticated weapons...
