What do they mean by playing it safe? I think it's bogus since every company has to plan ahead. If no new games are being made for tomorrow or today, what will attract a customer and what will companies sell?

Nintendo is doing well and if sales slow, they can afford a small price drop. Also, nothing much is expected from nintendo. Anything sells on the Wii due to its new found target audience.

Sony has no choice but to keep pushing. With releases like kz2, infamous, uncharted 2 and maybe a gt5, gow3, team ico game and a new ratchet and clank, they can't slow down or put a hold on things. I think they will see what kz2 does in terms of sw and hw sales and take it from there. Chances are, it they do go well, they will want to keep the momentum going.

With the 360 it's hard to say since they announce things relatively close to completion. However, I do think they will be spending less on buying exclusive dlc, timed exclusives and making certain titles go multiplat. However, you could argue this based on how well the 360 does holding the ps3 back in sales. If the ps3 starts selling better, can they afford another price cut or more splash outs on titles and dlc?

they mean they won't be taking risks.  this holiday EA put out two new IPs: dead space and mirrors edge.  they got (and i quote) "diappointing sales".  don't expect many new IPs in the near future.  instead expect new installments of established franchises.  the next halo, the next zelda, the next GT, the next madden, the next *insert name of any well know franchise*.  that's it.
