We have no idea as to the exact nature of the backroom wrangling that saw the games publishing rights transfer from Microsoft to Electronic Arts. However it is safe to say that Microsoft probably expected some serious compensation, and by far the cheapest compensation Electronic Arts could have provided was exclusivity for the upcoming sequel or the rest of the trilogy.
I find it unfathomable to imagine that Electronic Arts paid out the money to reacquire the rights for the PC version. Basically they would have to give Microsoft that which they themselves made publishing the game. So seeing as Electronic Arts has delivered no other exclusive, and they haven't delivered compelling content for the first installment in the series. You have little left other then continued exclusivity.
To me it isn't a question about what will make Electronic Arts more money. The question is what are the contractual obligations they are under. Which they probably couldn't do anything about. Unless perhaps they activated an escape clause, but then again that would be more expensive then the profits they would reap in on a port.
