What's wrong with hyping games? It depends on the level of hype. I'm going to be VGC specific and not talk about outside of our little world:
1. When something starts getting too much hype, it's threads start cluttering the Hot Topics. Official threads help this out but don't completely fix the issue.
2. A lot of people on here judge quality based on hype, and throw a hissy fit about corrupt reviewers when the uber hyped game they wanted to do so well critically got shitted upon or wasn't praised as Christ-like. Hissy fits are annoying.
3. The hype for games sometimes translates into unrealistic sales hype, and then again, hissy fits galore when sales are average occurs. Again, hissy fits are annoying.
4. More hissy fits occur when a third party exclusive goes multiplatform, and those are the worst hissy fits of them all.
5. All of the above cases that cause hissy fits then causes rival console owners to poke them with sticks to antagonize them, which is only entertaining for five minutes. Unfortunately it lasts much much longer than that. It causes damage control hissy fits which are basically the "good offense is the best defense" of hissy fits.
In a nutshell, there is hype and then there is hype that better deliver or the shitstorm will follow. Heavy Rain has hype. Infamous has hype. Motorstorm Pacific Rift had hype. SOCOM Confrontation had hype. Little Big Planet had shitstorm brewing hype. Resistance 2 had shitstorm brewing hype. Killzone 2 has shitstorm brewing hype. Uncharted 2 is beginning it's transformation from hype to shitstorm brewing hype. One day in the far off future when the developers get around to making them, FF 13 Versus and GT5 will both have shitstorm brewing hype.
It doesn't help that most of the hype is presented in an absolute form. The only words I don't see in the vocabulary of some PS3 fans on here are "I think", "in my opinion", and "maybe".
Before someone gives me the obvious answer of "But all fanboys do this shit", yes I know they do. This topic asked about PS3 owners though so I stuck with that.
