it's not just the leading, there's a higher chance that the target will switch directions. The more you are leading the target the more the target has a chance to change directions and completely screw up your shot. Also second jump and wall jumps in UT2004 really add to that.

Edit: It also means you are leading farther away while the person falls faster, thus you have a lot less time to get your shot straight than if you had to lead less.

Hence the higher dose of luck necessary.  Unless you are a mind reader.  Launch and pray.
