Core 2 Quad supports DDR2.

i7 supports DDR3.

Both are quad core.

Core 2 Quad supports any type of memory, since it doesn't have a memory controller. This is why there was no socket change from DDR2 -> DDR3 with Intel.

The original Phenom's memory controller supported DDR3, but the socket and motherboards didn't. DDR3 motherboards for Phenom II are coming in February.

DDR3 is double the price of DDR2 at minimal additional performance. DDR2 is the best option today anyway. The fact you're forced to use DDR3 and a DDR3 motherboard with Core i7 means it is too expensive for most people. On the other hand, AMD's DDR3 CPUs will work in DDR2 motherboards so you still have the choice. There will even be hybrid DDR2/DDR3 motherboards from AMD.
