You can use the "its just another" argument on most games =P
For me top contenders are:
Bioshock
MP3
SMG
Crysis
Honorable Mention:
Halo 3
SSBB
Based soley on the games I have been able to play and what I have seen of the games so far (aka based on an incomplete evaluation) I would say Crysis or SMG.
Bioshock An obvious choice as a contender, it does a lot of things the right way and it does them consistently. Choosing your path, customizing your character, and impacting the world are all parts of the formula that make Bioshock an extremely fun game and its easily the GoTY on the 360 imho. Edit: I almost forgot to make mention of Bioshock's incredible sound, honestly the sound is what completes the atmosphere and makes the game as convincing and immersive as it is. The sound alone in this game deserves all the awards you can give it.
Metroid Prime 3: In addition to being a very fun and very well done game the controls are what puts it over the top and lets it be in this category when Halo 3 isn't (in my book). I think the impact these controls will have on the Wii's future may not be fully realized right now but in my opinion this is one of the best examples of how to use the Wii properly.
Super Mario Galaxy: Aside from the innovation of the game design itself, the fact that everyone who plays the game whether they be young, old, hardcore, casual, or something in between....well for me that really says a lot about the game. For a game to be fun for everyone to pick up and play should be the goal of every developer and it should be the standard by which we measure all games. Any game that is to be held up as standard for all others to strive for is at least a contender for GoTY overall and in this case a shoe in for GoTY on the Wii. Sorry MP3, but come Nov you will have to make room for Mario.
Crysis: From what I have seen does everything Bioshock did...but better (edit: Except Sound). It dumps you in a wierd very well atmosphered story, has new gameplay elements for a FPS that allow you to have innumerable tactical options and customization options on the fly, and the graphics are more realistic (even the water). There is no doubt for me this game deserves GoTY on the PC, but there is doubt that it will recieve those honors and even more doubt it will recieve the praise it deserves in GoTY consideration.
For me it is a toss up between Crysis and SMG for the reasons stated above, but in reality I have to say that I feel an excellent game that everyone loves should always beat an excellent game that a small subsection of the community loves when it comes to GoTY.
So with that in mind this one goes to "Super Mario Galaxy", for the simple reason that it is fun for everyone.
