Oh, how much I agree with this. Games should be for all systems, Windows is becoming over-rated, it's sickening. Linux and Mac need some love, seriously. I know Linux isn't highly used outside of servers and for and everyday joe, but I can tell you this: A game that is based off the Linux system will run a HELL of a lot smoother than on any Windows PC anyday. (No, I'm not talking about how Linux has to run games now, because honestly it sucks. I mean if a Dev actually Developed a game for Linux OS.) I know how a lot of gamers hate Macs, but seriously, they need some love. |
It's not going to happen except for those that can adapt Windows based games. It's just a matter of numbers and nothing else makes sense for a developer.
I'm a webmaster for part of a major university website so I monitor web traffic monthly. A majority of our traffic is from other university and academic centers both of which tend to have a greater representation of both Linux and Mac than the general population (more geeks).
Each month we had between 15-18M hits from 160-220K distinct visitors who download 335-450GB of material. This is a pretty damn good statistical sample and tends to have fairly minor changes month to month.

This may not be the figures that you and I want, and they may not be the figures that the very vocal supporters of Macs and Linux would have you believe; but they are a fact and game developers can hardly be expected to ignore them.
