This generation has highlighted one flaw in your logic. With all the competition Sony still felt no compunction whatsoever about engaging in all the poor behavior you sighted. Thus the undeniable truth is that Sony does not abide by the rules of common sense, or behave in a manner that is beneficial to gamers as a whole.

Sony high jacked their loyal customer base into a format war. That had little to no bearing on gaming. While they were at that they used their first party hardware in their console. Which as most developers have said has a lot of drawbacks for them, and does not result in better gaming. In fact Sony has bragged about this. The screwing over of third party developers for their own gain. Then this came with a steep price tag which gamers were expected to pick up. Yes this is something a friend would do to you.

Speaking as to the gobbling up of third parties. Sony is perhaps the biggest vulture of the lot. Sony in the past five years has probably only acquired twenty studios. How does that benefit third parties. The answer is it does not. It comes at the cost of their bottom lines. When they have to face off against a dozen first party games every year. Usually with fantastic bankrolls. Which Sony can absorb, but a smaller studio has no hope to match.

I honestly do not see the upside to having Sony being a console player. In fact Sony needs to lose badly to send a message down through the years about not abusing others for your own gain. Not taking customers for granted, not abusing your partners, and having some humility. In much the same way Atari had to be the morality tale about ensuring quality control. Sony is just not being a positive force.

I know its bashing, but someone has to present the contrary view. Sony did not respond to competition, and has made it a point to crush all forms of competition. Sony needs to learn the meaning of the word cooperate. Microsoft and Nintendo do a far better job of working with others for mutual benefit. They also do a better job of putting the customer further ahead in their plans.

Speaking to your argument about people losing their jobs. Sony has cost other people their jobs for years. This is what competition means they have run a lot of other players out of the business. These people will eventually get new jobs. It is not as if they go into a black hole. They move on and work for different companies. When Sony is not making the games to fill a spot someone else will, and that someone else will need employees.

This is hostage mentality at its worst. Sony can do whatever they damn well please, because it would be sad if they had to fire their employees. Why aren't you thinking about the people losing their jobs, because of what Sony is doing to them. Cannot be bothered to think of a developer like Free Radical, or Factor 5? All those employees out of a job, because of what Sony did.

I want to hear more about how Sony is actually benefiting the industry and gamers. I sure as hell haven't seen a lot this generation, and as I said the competition argument is blowing smoke. The competition did not force Sony to do right by anyone except for Sony. Competition is neither good nor bad. It has its moments, and it has its drawbacks. Sony was not competing, and under your assumption it is not a defense for why they should stay.

Perhaps Sony has behaved badly enough that they need to leave the industry? Has that thought occurred to you? There is such a thing as getting what you have coming, and the shit Sony pulled this generation should probably come with a high price.
