It also depends on the distance the cars have to be shipped. Japanese & Korean cars are fairly comparable to the exchange rate world wide when you consider the government charges. Where as European cars have to be shipped much further, so there will always be a higher price for that. We also have Right Hand Drive cars because we drive on the left hand side of the road, which is more rare than the other way around.

to add your partially right. All import cars get charged a tariff too. This is because Aus is trying to protect Holden and Ford. If we didn't manufacture cars their would be no tariff on cars.
