Huge install base, and people buying it shows they don't care about HD, or more complex games. Black and white DS coming soon? It'd be so easy to program for, plus it's so cheap! Everyone can get it! Erm, what's this trend you're complaining about? Is it a problem if the Wii takes away support from the HD consoles? Your DVD to VHS comparison has me believing you find gaming on Wii to be a step back from the HD consoles. Since when has gaming been all about graphics?
How about that DS? Are you angry the PSP hasn't taken all the support, since the hardware is more powerful?
A step back in graphics doesn't mean we're going "backwards." The newest GTA going on DS is going back to 2D - finally something different, I'm lovin it. Mega Man 9 was one of my favorite games of 08, a game with NES graphics. Many people believe Persona 4, a PS2 game, was the best JRPG of 08 (I haven't played it yet).
It's not a matter of being against HD, it's simply arguing the benefits currently aren't worth the cost. I can do fine without HD right now, just like I can with... I don't know, movies in IMAX theaters?
