Pretty much all of the gaming divisions losses in the past few years can be attributed as an investment in future Blu-Ray income. The PS3 carried Blu-Ray to victory, and its also why the PS3 cost $600, instead of $500, when it was released.

The income from that strategic victory by Sony will dwarf the R&D expense of the PS3, by comparison, over the next 15 years, by royalties from BDs alone. SCE is awesome -- they have never, ever, let Sony down in the grand scheme.

I've heard this theory many times, but so far no one has shown how much Sony receives in royalties for each BR disc sold (keeping in mind that there are more companies in the Blu-Ray association).

Yeah, the royalty breakdowns don't actually look great unless you assume they're charging more then DVD.  Which seems unlikely considering everyone throught DVD royalties were too high and you had two competing formats this time around.

The breakdowns were done a month or two ago and were pretty illuminating.

Whatever it is though... Sony makes less then 30% of it.
