Research and development for a console being released in 2011/2012/2013 would already be pretty far along. It doesn't matter how much money Sony will have then, they are working with the resources they have now. Also, what if they sink more money in the Playstation and the PS4 flops and sinks the entire devision/company? Even if the PS3 will end up being on the market for much longer, if Microsoft and Nintendo release their consoles, Sony will be forced to release the PS4 at the same time. Launching a console in the middle of a generation is extremely dangerous. I don't think Sony can afford to take too many risks.
