I find it interesting that the article referred to in this paragraph:

I'm not quite sure what their game is. It'd be wrong to presume that they have some kind of hidden agenda, or are paid by Microsoft (as my title might suggest), but another of THEIR ARTICLES does take a damning view of Sony, painting them as the fool, despite their sourced book featuring no such accusation. Back to reality -- Sony is not faring as well as it would like or as well as expected this generation.

The complexity of the console has resulted in a higher price point than many are willing to pay. But such a price point was originally necessary to prevent the company from completely losing its shirt on the console. And now it is necessary because the company -- as a whole -- seemingly cannot afford to sell the console as a substantial loss again (which would happen if the price were dropped to increase the console's attractiveness/competitiveness))

In reality, it is a testament to the value and strength of the PS3 that it has sold as well as it has. Previous consoles with such a pricepoint (over $500) have for all intents and purposes tanked. Remember the Neo Geo? Remember the 3DO?

The Holiday Season decrease year-to-year for the PS3 was bad -- but as noted herein some of it can be explained. What was much worse for the company -- and the reason the PS3 price can't be dropped right now -- is the sales of the high-end electronics where the corporation makes big profits. That is the real "doomsday" problem for Sony -- and potentially for the PS3 (because it is the reason the price cannot be lowered).
