That's like saying New Super Mario Bros might alienate Mario fanboys on the basis that it throws out the 3d 3rd person perspective.

The only GTA games i enjoyed were birds eye view as well. However that isn't how the series is currently thought of.  And it's not similar to saying that NSMB would alienate because if I'm not mistaken the 2D marios have always been more popular than thier 3D variants.  I don't believe we can say the same of GTA.
