Replay value.
It helps set defined goals in a game that would otherwise not be there. It's a great way to track your progress on a game, over all games. I wouldn't have played some of the games I have, nor played them as much as it wasn't for achievements. And for the most part (if not all of it), I enjoyed the extra challenge of beating Call of Duty 2 on Veteran when CoD2 launched.
Colonel - Probably a game that has an E rating.
