I got a reason. Its designed in Australia and its basically music in mp3 format but when you buy it from a shop it comes on a flash memory stick.

It offers advantages like website access, videos, lyrics, etc. Now the thing about it is you buy it from a shop, you get a product in your hands and there is incentive to motivate not stealing it online.

Until they make games that are so big the cost of flash storage is economically unviable (its getting cheaper every day) this alternative method is going to be a credible option.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
