There are different forms of violence of course in every sort of game. Compare shooters like battlefield to Call of Duty (4) and Gears of War (2). All shooters, all great hits online but they gradually become more violent. Still, as mentioned they are all massive hits.
I'd wager that Gears would be the same amount of fun if it had call of duty style gore in it.
