Our enormously productive economy...demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption...We need things consumed, burned up, worn out, replaced, and discarded at an ever increasing rate. -Victor Lebow, retailing analyst quoted by Vance Packard in The Waste Makers, 1960 |
Becuase it is hilarious, or becuase you truly believe it? I find it hilarious. If your life is only about consuming and satifying your immidate desires, your life will probably be satisfactory if you live in a developed nation, but you wiill not reach your potential in inteligeence or anything else, your life will lack meaning, and you will ot move humanity forward as much as you could have if you made that your goal.
In my high school, people who only focus on sonsuming (video games, movie, music, food, drugs, sex, ect) get worse grades, orare phycotic, or are very self-centered and will probably not suceed very much once they get out of college.
