It looks to me that the majority of the "costs of death penalty" come from awaiting sentancing i.e. same as life in prison, and the large settlements for when they epic fail by killing someone innocent.

So it would be my perception that citing this material to support the argument you attribute to it is not fruitfull.

In construct it would be cheaper to kill someone (sooner the better/cheaper) than let them remain in prison for decades.
