Microsoft's earnings are pretty regular as far as I've seen (excluding the entertainment division as we all know). They always make tons of money on Windows/Office, a smaller amount of money on other divisions, and then lose some money on online services and the famous "corporate level activity" which can contain almost anything. I don't believe these layoffs happen because the company is really hurting, more likely they're taking the opportunity to cut off some fat, while preparing in advance for the economy's continued downturn.

Recession does make for a good excuse though.
