I think a lot of emphasis has been placed on difficulty level being distinguishing characteristic of hardcore. More often than not, I will agree, but I don't think that hard games are automatically hardcore...
Although the elusive definition for a hardcore game does not exist, I think a hardcore game is one that has challenges in place to satisfy the most masochistic of gamers.
EDIT: interesting story btw, do you have two tvs and sets in the same room?
