I would seriously have to question this number, I personally know a lot of people and out of say 250 or more there is only one person of those I know can't read. He is my wifes grandpa (who is 89 years old), he had to leave school at a very very young age to help support his family working on a farm after his father died.
Think about it, how many people do you know who can't read? Sure a few of the people I know can barely put 2 sentences together but they CAN. Maybe it is more prevailing in other parts of the country but around here it isn't really an issue. Around here being ( Kentucky ).
