I think the main quest is a bit shorter than that (around 50-55hrs).
The thing is - not many games are *that* long for the main quest. Look at any WRPG: They can easily be beaten in 20-25hrs. Heck, even the old Final Fantasies weren't that long.
*but* games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, and The Last Remnant all have beefy sidequests. On TLR, I've spent far more time on sidequests than I have the main quest - all of which expand the game time.
The better question is to ask 'is it a good 40 hours? If that is just 40hrs for the main quest, are the side quests actually good?'
I'd rather get 40hrs of a phenominal JRPG + 20hrs of phenominal side quests, and New Game+ with other stuff than a generic 80hr quest that sacrificed so much just to be long.
I'm not trying to defend SO's length, but there are better questions out there to ask about SO4 than if 40hrs is too short....Whats the longest next-gen RPG thus far for main quest time? I think Lost Odyssey clocks in right at 55-60hrs w/o the massive sidequests on Disc 4.

Ahhh, i see you bring up really good points there Stick. Agreed, but lets hope the VP Side quests are as insanely hard as they were in Till the end of time, my god...

I agree. As long as the side quests are of awesome quality, 40hrs for the MQ will be plenty. The most important key (to me) is replayability - and if you can get an extra playthrough or two out of it due to really good extras, that's awesome.
