Funny, following the advice of Shio on these forums I just played through both games this past week.
The series is now one of my favorite series in gaming. The storyline and presentation is astonishing, and the writing surpasses that of most games and movies. I do prefer the second game however, the first one had a rather cliche plot, a little overblown as well. The second game was more introspective, grounded in reality with a lot of depth. There was a lot of thinking material in MP2's script.
The reason the first game sold so well as opposed to MP2 was because of the bullet time feature that was introduced with MP1. The Matrix style effect was extremely popular at the time and MP1was the first to translate it into gameplay.
