My personal experience with both PSN and Xbox Live is that for long distance play Xbox Live is a lot more liveable for some reason. I also get a funny error about 50% of the time when trying to send a message on PSN, but I won't count it against anything as I haven't heard anyone else having the same issue.
So for New Zealand I would say that Xbox Live is probably the superior service.
