That's why I recommended he pick up something turn-based like Blue Dragon.
Tales games are an acquired taste unless you're just huge into anime and don't care about getting pounded in the face endlessly with the same tropes. Might not be something he wants to risk his money on.

That is the kind of trope I meant. Tales games are parades of cliches and overused themes and devices.
And look, you can't look at my avatar and pretend I'm somehow biased against JRPGs. Tales games are considerably worse in this regard than most.
