You are not mistaken here.

Where in the world did you get your information MrBubbles?  Barozi is right.  As an example, I'm on my third different Xbox, yet Live transfers everytime.  Another example is my friend, who has a Xbox Live Gamertag but does not have an Xbox.  He uses it on mine and another friends.  He transfers his Gamertag every time he's at one of our houses.  You just need to know your Windows Live ID and the password.
