M$ would be hard pressed to eliminate nintendo but you're right that they've one-uped sony this gen and are capable of more. However, I also think that the very fact that ps3 has done what it has done despite the odds in price, loss of exclusives, media fallout, gamer rejection, etc means that M$ can't kick sony out of gaming either. Sony themselves would have to leave voluntarily if they feel they can't make money from this business anymore. Thus, M$ would be hard pressed to gain a monopoly in this ndustry.

... and all it cost Sony was all of the profits they earned from the PS2 and the destruction of their brand.

What you have to consider is what killed Sega was not any one console, but the fact that they had failed badly enough on a few systems that consumers didn't really trust their products anymore. The PSP and PS3 may not have performed that badly, but Sony is now in a position where they can not afford to do more damage to themself without risking their entire gaming division.

In addition to gamers, SEGA also earned mistrust among 3rd parties for ending consoles prematurely which is never a good thing. Even at their worst Sony is still supported by the vast majority of 3rd parties. This is one difference between sony and sega.

Secondly, sega was never big enough to shoulder the financial strain that came to them thus, they had to pull out.

Thirdly, sega never dominated this industry. Sony has done so twice with marketshare that no one else is likely to ever achieve again. This creates a motivating force that success is possible since it has been seen before. Even the fact that nintendo also went from first (in terms of marketshare) to last to first again adds fuel to this possibility.

Lastly, sony is unlikely to make the same mistakes again after all what it has cost them financially. Thus, the likelyhood of their gaming division dying as a result of more major errors next gen is slim.
