Well id suggest its alot more than Shiggy. They got Iwata and it was his balls on the line when they went with DS and Wii. Shigeru might have come up with the idea but Iwata said "go team". You notice he's the guy thats been talkin about bathroom scales, be thankfull theres visionary executives working in japan still. |
The secret to success is to have the gift of the visionary and yet be firmly anchored in reality and practicality. It is difficult to find both qualities in one person, so it is sometimes best to have a team.
Conquering Roman would parade in triumph through the streets of Roman. Standing behind them on the chariot would be a slave whose role it was to whisper in his ear "Remember that you are mortal, all power is ephemeral."
I almost picture Miyamoto leading Nintendo with his vision of new game, new controls, new populations of gamers, while Iwata stands at his shoulder to support him; and to whisper in his ear, "Keep it simple, keep it practical, keep it affordable and make it reliable."
Which is undoubtably why they were joint recipients of the GameDaily Persons of the Year Award on December 23. GameDaily specifically decided that it was the partnership that had made the success, not either individual alone.
Perhaps the real tragedy at Sony was they had a first class genius in Ken Kutaragi but they forgot to have someone to whisper in his ear and remind him to keep it practical and affordable.
