Rockstar has decided it wants to make GTA a "serious" work, which will garner praise as being high form of storytelling. The focus is on realism and so on.
My take is, if you don't like the direction of GTA, buy Saint's Row, which appears to be going the other way, and going over the top, and just pure mayhem.
