yes, you need to learn the courses completely and memorize every bump on your way in order to win the later stages and online races
sometimes the fastest path isn't much wider than your own vehicle - I always get an adrenalin rush when I boost down such a way at full speed with deadly obstacles zooming by left and right

MS:PR handles very much like the first one, so if you "hated" that game, then I'm quite sure you won't be able to enjoy it's successor either
