For reasons that I’ve never fully understood, BDs have always been a tad more expensive than HD DVDs.

Blu-Ray disc is new technology for which new manufacturing equipment is required, a scratch resistant layer is mandatory.

However per GB cost, Blu-Ray production was actually cheaper.

If a success and if it results into mass production of DVD/Blu-Ray combo discs, this could bring down pricing. Retailers potentially require less shelf space and when people buy a HDTV and Blu-Ray compatible device they can immediately take advantage of Blu-Ray's provided benefits.

IMO not a bad idea per se, but it remains to be seen if this approach will be successful or not. It can both simplify as well as complicate things depending how the approach will be.
