Was there a Game Cube or Xbox light/slim released several years ago?

That might have somethign to do with the fact that Sony, of the three console manufacturers, has the longest history and the most experience with revising hardware, from TV's to Radio's to consoles. They control each stage of a products production giving them fast and easy access to revise the hardware.

I'm not exactly sure what the case was with the GC or the original Xbox, but MS or Nintendo may have had to find a third party to do the revisions for them, increasing the cost of the venture.

Sony would also stand to gain a great deal in the long run from such a revision for the PS3. It's still not selling at a profit, a revision may be exactly what Sony need to turn those losses into gains.

But where will the money come from to do these revisions? The entire entertainment division is losing $$$ right now.

If it costs Sony 50M to redesign the PS3 and modify manufacturing to make a PS3 Slim, and it reduced production/shipping costs by $25 per console.  (both entirely made up numbers)  They would recoup the slim design costs by selling 2M slim consoles.

Making a slim model will help save them money.  That is what Sony needs now.  The sooner they can do it, the faster they can stop the bleeding.
