If you get an HDMI cable, you'll be fine as long as your TV supports HDMI.
The resolution problem with the PS3 is that it doesn't automatically upscale, the developers have to program that in. Thus, if you're playing on a 1080i only TV set, a game with a max resolution of 720p will be downscaled to 480p.
