The industry needed saving?

I think it would be fair to say that a large portion of gamers grew up either with Nintendo's NES/SNES or Sony's Playstation and those generations are starting to grow up.  Nintendo did two things with the Wii that really made a difference.

The first is that it got more people into gaming young and old.  For the industry to continue to grow and thrive, it cannot have a stagnant or nearly stagnant crowd to cater to.

The second is that it put video games further into mainstream than they have been probably since the NES.  Today people who don't even normally play video games know what a Wii is and among those same people have been getting interested in the Wii.  Getting the gaming industry out of niche status isn't something the Wii can do on its own, but it's doing a better job of it than any console has in years.

The industry might not have been in need of saving, but Nintendo and the Wii are definitely good for it.
