Trade was initially hindered by the Eisenhower administration in response to the nationalization of US companies in Cuba. After the revolution, Castro nationalized many private companies held by US companies. Under the Kennedy administration, an embargo was enacted that prohibited nearly all trade with Cuba; travel restrictions were subsequently enacted. This was done to apply pressure to the Cuban government.
