I highly suggest you read up more on World War II before making such a statement.

Collateral damage wasn't even much of a consideration before the Vietnam War. Only then, because of the influx of a quickly-moving media, did we start seeing the atrocities of war first-hand. Then the public suddenly started caring, but only about the things they see.

Don't kid yourself too much. You'll only be left depressed when you discover the real truth.

Bombs kill indiscriminately. Only now that we have smart bombs and whatnot do we try to avoid civilian casualties. It's an amazing phenomenon, really... The USA will spend upwards of $5m for every missile launched to avoid a single civilian death. Compare that to Dresden.
