ALL i was saying was that the game buying public has voted with their wallets. That is surely the only "real" measure of quality because it's what the majority want.

But people is not only considering quality when they purchase something, they consider lots of things (price, opinions, interests,...) and can be very vurnerable to brilliant marketing campaings (not only advertising). There are lots of exemples outside videogames where people don't buy the most quality product.
